Leon Silvers is the creator of Drag Therapy. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor providing individual, group, couple, and family psychotherapy in private practice in New York City. Because of Covid-19, Leon has moved his practice, including Drag Therapy workshops and events, completely virtual. He is the founder and director of Silvers Psychotherapy, a group therapy practice specializing in working with trauma, anxiety and depression, addiction, people of color, and LGBTQ people. His wide clinical experience includes working with clients from many racial and ethnic backgrounds, ages, religions, disabilities, gender, and sexual orientations. Some of his clinical experiences have been as a full-time psychotherapist at various mental health clinics providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy for adults and adolescents; working in outpatient substance abuse; in crisis intervention for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, hate crimes, and HIV-related violence; and in Non-Profit HIV/AIDS service organizations. He has been invited to present Drag Therapy events and workshops at multiple venues, including Amazon, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, WorldPride, and RuPaul’s Drag Con. He can be seen doing Drag Therapy on Season 2 of the reality show "Drag Heals" which airs October 2, 2020 on Amazon Prime.
Leon uses an eclectic approach combining psychodynamic/insight-oriented therapy, Internal Family Systems, somatic therapy, trauma therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. He is trained in EMDR and is a New York State Certified Rape Crisis Counselor. He has served as the Clinical Director of Identity House, a non-profit LGBTQ service organization. He has also presented and published on a wide variety of topics including eating disorders, domestic/intimate partner violence, immigration and acculturation, LGBTQ issues, and gender. Leon graduated from New York University with a Master's degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude, from Georgia State University. |
